Anthropology, Orality and Music

Yemen and the Arab World

For more than thirty years, I have been making research in anthropology and ethnomusicology upon society and musical traditions in Yemen and in several other Arab countries. I am trying to understand the performance context, the ritual practices, the mythical representations, the musical systems, the relations between language and music, as well as the formation of contemporary identities ; in brief, in which human "veins" the music "flows" and through which it produces such an energy.

Through this web site, I would like to share this scientific experience with visitors, and specially to give them access to certain sound and audiovisual materials upon which these researches were based. I hope that this digital way of communication will raise exchanges and debates around these topics.
